Calmer Days, Calmer Nights

For years, Alison Babil lived with chronic insomnia. Despite trying everything from traditional remedies to lifestyle changes, restful sleep remained out of reach. Then, in 2020, she attended a virtual workshop on the Sounder Sleep System—and everything shifted. “Within a couple of weeks, I was sleeping seven to eight hours a night,” she says. “I couldn’t believe it.”

Now a certified Feldenkrais practitioner and trained Sounder Sleep instructor, she brings this gentle, neuroscience-informed approach to others who struggle with sleep. Her passion is rooted in personal transformation: “It changed my life, and I wanted to share it.”

The Sounder Sleep System uses small, repeated physical movements—of the hands, torso, or limbs—paired with natural breathing to ease the nervous system into a parasympathetic state. These movements, she explains, are deeply calming. “When we soften the hands, the nervous system relaxes. Tension in the hands is often mirrored in the brain.”

Alison’s classes are highly experiential. Movements are adapted to the needs of each participant, whether seated or on the floor. “It’s not about perfection,” she says. “It’s about ease, comfort, and learning how to let go.”

Students often report surprising levels of awareness and calm emerging from the sessions. Some notice new sensations, others reconnect with a rhythm of rest that had been long forgotten. “There’s always learning,” she says. “Some people just notice more, but every student finds something valuable in the experience.”

In a world increasingly shaped by overstimulation and stress, she sees this work as vital. “We already have the tools,” she emphasizes. “Our bodies are designed to return to balance.”

Her approach is gentle, yet powerful—an invitation to re-discover rest from the inside out. As she puts it: Calmer days equal calmer nights.”
