Cinema of South Korea

Instructor: Mary Dutterer, Associate Professor, Prince George’s Community College

The Korean film, Parasite from director Bong Joon-ho received critical acclaim and, among other awards, was the 2020 Academy Award recipient for Best Picture. This exposure turned many western audiences on to Korean cinema. Did you know, however, that Korea has been producing some of the most innovative and compelling cinema for the past twenty years?  This lecture will review contemporary Korean cinema, starting with Parasite and looking at other provocative examples. (Participants will enjoy the class most if they have seen Parasite, which can be accessed for a small fee on streaming services such as Amazon Prime, Google Play, and YouTube.)
