Tutor Corner July 2022

FireworksAmerican BoyWe just wrapped up a school year full of tutoring fun – thank you to our tutors who continue to commit to volunteering despite the current challenges – you’re amazing! We’re looking forward to another successful year of tutoring to come. Don’t forget to have some fun this summer!

Featured Strategy and Book

The featured strategy this month is using MANIPULATIVES to aid learning. Did you know we have a bookcase full of learning manipulatives available for checkout here in our Oasis Resource Room? Have you tried them? By nature, young learners gravitate towards hands-on learning so why not try to incorporate some of these items into your lessons? Or create your own!

This month’s featured book is Llama Lama Red Pajama.

You can find this book in our Resource room. Check out these two readings of Llama Llama Red Pajama and see how the same book can be read different ways to engage your student:

How can you use manipulatives to support this book?

  • Cut out pictures of rhyming words and have students match pictures
  • Pull items out of a bag (ex. pen) and come up with a rhyming word (ex. hen). Optional: write words down and discuss why they rhyme (same ending sound)
  • Identify sight words with student as you read the book. Afterward, have student use the fishing manipulative to ‘catch’ and identify the words
  • Use the ‘silly sentences’ manipulative to try to create rhyming within a sentence (or two)

Tutor Highlight

We celebrated our tutors at our annual tutor appreciation lunch in June during which the fabulous Daryl Davis performed a few tunes, we played JeoPARTY – Children’s Literacy Edition, and we had the pleasure of hearing many inspirational tutoring stories directly from our tutors. Here are some pictures from our celebration:
